What is a Good Wine to Serve With BBQ Food?

What is it about BBQ food that seems to put a smile on our faces? Love love love to BBQ. Summer, fall, winter or spring. It just doesn’t matter. It also seems to bring the caveman out in the guys. Big hunks of meat, fowl, fish, pork, ribs. You can almost hear them do their ‘Tim the Tool Man Taylor’ grunt. (Born in the early to mid ‘90s? Google it for a laugh).

Beef. Tons of options. Zinfandel is a great choice. The fruitier styles go great with ribs and the fabulous sauces used for basting. The ones with more oomph are great with a roast with a nice flavourful rub or maybe even just a Striploin right over the coals with nothing but a little pepper and a wee bit of salt.

Pork (including ham). Okay, so if you have never BBQ’d a hamsteak you really must try it. Yum. A Gewürztraminer or a lovely dry Rosé. Pork chops, Pork tenderloin… you don’t need to go white wine with white meat. Remember that it is what you are putting on or in it is what counts. Chicken. How about chicken tenders done with a tomato sauce? A Chianti Classico would be awesome!

Let’s not forget about fish. Try a Chilean or Californian Chardonnay with some smoked salmon. If you really want to have fun, try a Manzanilla Sherry with some Halibut or Sole (It isn’t your grandmother’s sherry).
